Yup. Gotta read the fee disclosures and change your spending habits accordingly.

When I was in my twenties I frequently got hit with fees. After a while I started primarily using credit unions or online accounts. I read the fee disclosures when opening an account and ask the hard questions before I open an account. Overall great tips! Nowadays with the ruthless banks we have you have to be proactive to keep from being taken advantage of.

I like the first tip. Padding your account with an extra $100 or $1000 that you never spend is a great way to make sure that simple errors won't incur you an unexpected fee.

Here's a tip: sometimes you can get a fee refunded if you call or talk to customer service at the bank. It's usually a one-time thing, but it will certainly help if you're in a financial crisis or if it was just an honest mistake that resulted in the fee. Hope that helps. Great article.

Bank of America really screwed me over. I started several accounts with them when I was 16, and they charged too many fees. Since then I switched over to Chevy Chase and though I get hit with the occasional $35 overdraft fee, they are not as hounding as Bank of America was. Worst bank ever. I hate Bank of America.

@Bucksome Boomer
Yes, the banking can be tough here. Probably something people in North American take for advantage.

I think that bank experience would test my christian character! I love ING Direct as well and am glad it works for Americans overseas.
