Craig – I’ve been doing monthly budgets for over 5-6 years now using a spreadsheet I got from a Crown Financial Bible Study.

It takes a lot of time to get your first budget up and running, and then a few months (usually 3) to refine the process. Once you get in the groove, though, the entire process gets a lot of quicker. Now, I probably spend a whopping 30-45 minutes a month on my budget, envelope system, financial goals, etc.

Once you can get a consistent system in place, it really should be a quick, painless process.

As far as suggestions go I think the best way to budget is to limit your “latte factor” which is all of the extra money you spend on unnecessary items. For example throughout the course of the day you might spend $12 on gum, tea, and a $6.00 cup of coffee.

Limit your spending and make it realistic.
