I would rather opt for an automated approach to my personal finances. There are just so many things to keep in mind, that one day you may feel overwhelmed and wake up with a bunch of late payment fees. I've been using https://www.inexfinance.com/ to keep track of my daily expenses and set my monthly budgets, works perfectly for managing cash transactions. Definitely a personal finance software can't solve all of your problems, but at least this takes care of the basic things while I can concentrate on the most important financial issues (like getting out of debts).

@Charlie
The envelop system is a great system. My problem with it was I got sick of trying to dig for money in multiple envelopes, checking out multiple times, and dealing with the hassle of change. We now spend 90% of our money in cash and just keep every receipt.

In my experience, the envelop system works for me best. It works like a control mechanism of money that rolls on my hand. When I notice that the accounted money inside the envelop is depleting, then its about time to tighten. Aside from just distributing the money, I have been accustomed to writing every expenditure that I had in a day. With that as a habit, I can track of my expenses, where I indulged much and which one I can sacrifice in the next coming days. Budgeting is truly a challenge and needs so much effort to make both ends meet. And this budgeting served as training ground in establishing a business.

Craig - I've been doing monthly budgets for over 5-6 years now using a spreadsheet I got from a Crown Financial Bible Study.

It takes a lot of time to get your first budget up and running, and then a few months (usually 3) to refine the process. Once you get in the groove, though, the entire process gets a lot of quicker. Now, I probably spend a whopping 30-45 minutes a month on my budget, envelope system, financial goals, etc.

Once you can get a consistent system in place, it really should be a quick, painless process.

@Toomeedom - I tried to read the article, but looks like a subscription is needed to read the article. Is that right? Thanks for passing along that resource.

Craig,

Great article the core message is very refined as well as the image being very helpful. I work for http://giftcardrescue.com and we offer gift cards / prepaid debit cards at discounted rates.

If you are looking to save money by using gift cards or as a present for a loved one I encourage you to check us out. We also purchase unwanted cards for cash.

As far as suggestions go I think the best way to budget is to limit your "latte factor" which is all of the extra money you spend on unnecessary items. For example throughout the course of the day you might spend $12 on gum, tea, and a $6.00 cup of coffee.

Limit your spending and make it realistic.
