If you’ve been an MH4C reader for long, you know that I do my own taxes (I also advise others to start a free filing online just to learn about taxes) and I file with Turbotax.

Looking for the best prices on Turbo Tax for the 2012 tax year?  Get more details on this post.

However, after doing just a few minutes of research, I feel like I’ve passed up some money saving TurboTax discounts that have been around for years.  Best of all, none of these discounts require TurboTax coupon codes.  You just need to enter the site through the links I point out in this post.

This post has been updated to include TurboTax discounts for the 2012 tax year.  As such, I indicated which offers are still valid and which are currently no longer valid.  From my research $20 off, or $54.99 for Home and Business is the lowest discounted price I could find.

For the last two years I’ve just gone to Amazon.com and purchased a downloadable version of TurboTax.  The total cost at Amazon is $69.99 for the Home & Business Federal + e-File + State 2012 [Download] (which I’ve always purchased).

The screen shot below shows you the regular prices available directly at TurboTax.

The following prices are for the version you can download or have sent as a CD.

The following prices are for the online version.

However, this year I wised up and decided I was going to see if there were any cheaper ways to buy TurboTax.  I’m glad I did because I was able to find several options to save big.

Of course, some of you will quality for free filing, but for the rest, at least we should take advantage of TurboTax discounts.

TurboTax Discounts Roundup | No TurboTax Coupon Codes Required

It was that simple.  Just enter through that link, and you can save 35% off TurboTax, and you still get to start for free.  Now, you should know that the discount does not apply to business filing, but it does apply to Deluxe, Premier, and Home and Business editions.  I did not see any evidence that this promotion is limited only to TD Ameritrade customers.

By going through the TD Ameritrade link you can save up to $26.75 if you file a Home & Business return (like me).

State Farm Bank Online Customers Free Deluxe Filing | $20 Off Other TurboTax Editions (Visitors Too)

If you are a State Farm Bank Online Customer, you can do a free Basic or Deluxe filing online.  You must have a State Farm Bank online account.

If you do not have a State Farm account, you can still save $0 by entering through the link on the State Farm site.

Click here to get your free Deluxe filing or save $20 as a non State Farm member.  Using this link Home and Business online would drop to $54.99 online or $79.99 to download.

Fidelity $20 Off Turbo Tax Discount for Visitors

You can get the same price by using this link as you can with the State Farm Link mentioned above.

Wells Fargo Customers and visitors can Save $20 off TurboTax

All customers and visitors can access this offer for 2012 taxes.  You can save $20 off your TurboTax purchase.

Details here.

Do you know of any other ways to get TurboTax discounts?

Actually, with the deals it looks like most of them require you to purchase the state separately, which runs about $38 for the Home and Business State. So, even with 35% off, it is cheaper for me to buy the package deal that includes the state filing for $76 from Amazon, rather than paying a “discounted” price of $48.70 for H/B and then having to pay an addt’l $38 for H/B State.

Jessica,
Thanks for ‘discovering’ the non-state inclusion and pointing it out. For those who file in states that don’t have state income tax then this would be a better way to go, but otherwise something like Amazon may be best.

I think the downloadable version from Amazon (or from other sources) have one state free but you can only print the state but not e-file. E-Filing a state is 19.99 extra.

Mat,
Thanks for letting us know about the potential extra charge is a person wishes to e-file their state taxes.

I can’t believe you wrote this article just when I was ready to start looking to buy turbo tax. I subscribe to your RSS feed and find your blog very useful. Thanks again.

Jim,
In my research I’d heard about deals from Sams Club and Costco, but I couldn’t confirm it. Thanks for letting us know about Sams Club deals. Anyone know about Costco?

Wild how many opportunities for discounts there are out there! It seems like they almost expect no one to pay full price!

Unfortunately, even with all those deals I paid full price for several years. Not this year!

USAA customers can get 35% off their federal return or 25% off both the federal and state returns. You actually have to sign into usaa.com, so it is not available for non-members.

In the last couple of years, I was able to save 25% off TurboTax through my USBank account, but they no longer offer that promotion. So, I decided to Google TurboTax discounts and found your site. What a pleasant surprise to find out I can save 35% through my Bank of America credit card account.
Thanks Craig!
PS I’ve added your site to my favs.

I to am a cheapskate who does her own taxes plus for two family members. I checked the 35% discount offered by Bank of America and with the discount, it’s cheaper to buy Turbo Tax Home and Business at Ebay. It seems to work out that way every year. I just take care to order a new product and from highly rated sellers.

Thank you for posting this! I had prepared my home and business taxes in February, but since I owed the IRS money I was waiting to file my taxes until now. Little did I know TurboTax would be raising their fees March 24! My credit union offered a 15% discount, but with this link for the 35% discount I ended up saving the extra $25 TurboTax was now charging me. THANK YOU!

Please note that once you do this one year, TurboTax will email you in January the following year to remind you to start the tax filing process. If you use TurboTax’s link or login directly into their website, you do not get the discount.

In order to get the discount, you usually have to be patient wait until February, and then find the discount link on your bank’s website. I used to use a discount through Bank of the West, but now use Bank of America. Notdiscount has been posted for 2013, yet…

Going through the Chase offer, I’d pay $34.99 for the Premier version, plus an additional $36.99 for the state return ($71.98 total). On Amazon, the TurboTax Premier + State download version is $58.11

Sue,
If a person needs both State and Federal I’ve found that Amazon does usually have the lowest price.

I found the link for for the Deluxe for 35% off. I could not get any of the 35% links you had listed to work for me. However, I’m SO glad I found your site as I was just about to start my taxes and was searching for a coupon code since I didn’t see my usual link through Bank of America.

One way to get around the seperate fee for the state e-file, I e-file the federal but it costs you nothing to print and send in the state form through the mail. Once you pay for the federal, you can print the state forms for filing. Thank you and God Bless! Jen

The problem is that the “discount” prices are quite deceptive. I’ve written about how misleading they are here, please check it out! http://www.pointsonthedollar.com/looking-for-discounts-on-turbotax/

David,
Thanks for the feedback. I typically don’t consider the biggest discount, but search for the lowest price. That’s why my updated post searches for the lowest price – http://www.moneyhelpforchristians.com/best-price-turbotax-2012-tax-year/.

Your summary of ways to save on TurboTax is the only one that has given such detail, and I really appreciate your efforts. Unfortunately, TT is too pricey; and I am probably going to use the online versions of TaxAct or H&R Block, which (including calculations for the state tax return) are a small fraction of the cost of TT.
